Thomas Tyrell discusses the enduring hostility between China and Taiwan. Given that China's imports and exports often travel by Taiwan through the South China Sea, tensions may lead to a cold war in time.

Why is China so aggressive towards Taiwan at this time? Invading a heavily armed island of 23 million people would likely incur the hostility of many countries around the world, including vital trading partners that China does not wish to lose.

The answer: China will vigorously defend her interests in the South China Sea because most of her exports to Europe leave by that passage and all of the oil China purchases from the Middle East must transit there as well. China's protectiveness of her trade routes may spark a global conflict in the coming years.
