Thomas Tyrrell discusses the growth of China's international trade networks and the slow decline of China's trade partnerships with the United States.

50 years after Nixon’s historical visit to Mao, there is a great decoupling of Chinese-American trade. President Xi and the Communist Party are motivated by 100 years humiliation of China by the Great Powers of the West, including America. Today, China’s revenge is to emulate and build an even greater global trading empire. Having learned from Europe's and America's mistakes, China has no intention of becoming a colonial power. For China, whether their trading partners are democratic or one-party states or outright dictatorships is ignored in favor of good business.
