A New York City detective investigates the slaying of a beloved ad exec and the more he learns about her---from her mentor, her fiancé, her diary, her maid and the haunting portrait in her apartment---the more he, too, comes under her spell. John LaShelle's atmospheric black-and-white cinematography won an Oscar, and nominations went to director Otto Preminger, supporting actor Clifton Webb and the screenplay.​
