This powerpoint lecture introduces the second half of the 19th century known as the Industrial Age. Big Business, Capitalism, Socialism, and the World Market had a most dramatic effect on writers and artists of the day. We will show how Marx and Darwin ushered in the spirit of modernism. We will present many examples of “Realist” paintings showing the everyday life of social climbers and working class stereotypes. Gone forever was the art and idealism of the Romantic Age.
