Come to the Fort Myers Regional Library to learn about the Yamato colony. Started by Jo Sakai in 1903 with funds by the Florida East Coast Railway, a colony of Japanese farmers formed in the Boca Raton area. This colony turned into a government military installation before becoming the site of the Morikami Gardens in 1977. This program is provided by The Florida Heritage Project: Multicultural Florida Digital Public Humanities.
Special services like sign language interpretation and assistive listening can be provided at events to patrons upon request. Please give at least up to five business days notice to library staff in order to schedule services at events. Call 239-479-4636 or stop by the reference desk at your local library.
