Brief Description of Event

Join WGCU Punta Gorda Library and historian Dr. Martha Bireda for a film screening and discussion of her essay series Reflections of a Colored Girl, which explores her personal journey, identity, and life experiences. WGCU created six 3-minute films based on essays penned by Dr. Bireda that originally aired on WGCU FM.

Dr. Martha Bireda is an author and lecturer who has written extensively about social issues related to race, gender, class, power, and culture. Her most recent title is The Promise of Whiteness: Its Past and Its Future, published in 2023. Dr. Bireda was born in southwest Florida in 1945 but spent the first 10 years of her life in a small town in western Virginia. Her family then moved back to Punta Gorda, where they have deep roots. Today, she is the Director of the Blanchard House Museum of African American History and Culture in Punta Gorda.
