Event Details

Experience a powerful look at the history of U.S. women astronauts with Valerie Neal, Curator Emerita of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum and a leading expert in human spaceflight.

In On a Mission: The Smithsonian History of U.S. Women Astronauts, Neal traces 45 years of achievement across 61 astronauts—from Sally Ride to Christina Hammock Koch—sharing firsthand stories of perseverance, breakthrough missions, and lasting impact in a male-dominated field. Drawing on interviews she conducted with many of these astronauts, the book highlights more than 100 shuttle missions, 30+ long-duration space station stays, and includes rare archival photographs. It’s a definitive and inspiring tribute to America’s women in space.
