Join Patti M. Walsh to learn more about the mythology and customs of the ancient Celts, winter solstice, and Yuletide!

To the ancient Celts, winter was terrifying. Without adequate food and fuel, they would die. The winter solstice assured them that the darkness would end and life would return. Learn about the eternal battle between the Holly King, who ruled over the dark months, and the Oak King, who ruled over the light. As personifications of winter and summer, the twin kings engage in an endless battle that reflects the seasonal cycles of the year—not only lightness and darkness, but also crop renewal and growth.
