Thomas Tyrell discusses the enduring hostility between China and Taiwan. Given that China's imports and exports often travel by Taiwan through the South China Sea, tensions may lead to a cold war in time.
Why is China so aggressive towards Taiwan at this time? Invading a heavily armed island of 23 million people would likely incur the hostility of many countries globally, including vital trading partners that China does not wish to lose. 
The answer? China will vigorously defend its interests in the South China Sea because most of its exports to Europe leave by that passage. All oil purchased by China from the Middle East must also transit there. China's protectiveness of her trade routes may spark a global conflict in the coming years.
