Event Details
King of France from the age of four, Louis grew to epitomize the image of absolute monarchy in the 17th century. His creation - the magnificent palace of Versailles and its brilliant, glamorous attendant court – became the envy of Europe. This glitter and brilliance was built on a rigid protocol, a grueling routine and schedule of public appearances, and daily commitments to government that make the head spin! Only one such as the Sun King could manage it! This lecture explores the many colorful and intriguing aspects of Louis XIV – his talents and his foibles – as well as the lasting effects of his reign.
Presented by historian and educator Nancy Maxwell. Having lived in Switzerland for more than 20 years, Nancy brings a European perspective to her enthusiasm for the study of history - a subject that she has taught for over 40 years.
