Program Description

Event Details

The 1920’s introduced bold new styles in music, fashion, and design. Art Deco, with its sharp angles and bright colors, became the latest trend in the decorative arts. In England, a young woman who began her career working as a teen-ager painting vases in a pottery factory emerged as an innovative and creative force in the world of ceramic design. Her name was Clarice Cliff.

She became the first woman art director of a major pottery factory in England and her designs were popular in Europe, the United States, and throughout the British Empire.

Susan Maynard earned a B.A. and M.A. in history, specializing in 20th century history of the United States and Europe. She has worked as a teacher and IT project manager, while devoting leisure time to learning about American and British ceramics and glass made in the 20th century. She has enjoyed collecting, researching, and giving presentations about those topics.
