In her debut, "southern-fried" novel about love, Lead Belly, and liberation, Tammy Lynne Stoner presents the reader with Miss Dara, who in 1923 "small-town" Midland, Texas, falls in love with her best friend who also happens to be a girl. Frightened about her situation, Miss Dara takes a job at the Imperial State Prison Farm for men. Once there, she befriends Lead Belly, a legendary blues singer who sings his way out of prison, but only after he makes Dara promise to free herself from her own prison. Sugar Land is a conquering novel that manages to be humorous and engaging even as it twists with race, class, and the fate of misfits.
